Thorncliffe Park is a dense, diverse, and utterly vibrant neighbourhood perched on the western edge of the Don Valley, just south of Eglinton Avenue East. The area is dominated by high-rise apartment towers built in the 1960s and 1970s, home to one of the most multicultural populations in the city. The Thorncliffe Park Plaza, a modest strip mall, punches far above its weight as a food destination: Iqbal Foods, the legendary halal supermarket, draws shoppers from across the GTA, and the surrounding restaurants serve everything from Afghan kabobs to Pakistani biryani to Middle Eastern shawarma. The Overlea Boulevard commercial strip adds further dining and shopping options, while the Don Valley trails are accessible at the neighbourhood's eastern edge. The East York Community Centre at Thorncliffe Park provides programming for the thousands of families, many of them newcomers, who call the area home. Despite its high density, the neighbourhood has a warm, communal energy, with children playing in the courtyards between towers and neighbours sharing food across cultural lines. The Eglinton Crosstown LRT will add a station at nearby Overlea Boulevard, improving connections to the wider city.
