Eastern Scarborough's Suburban Mosaic of Cultures
Golfdale-Cedarbrae-Woburn is a large, diverse neighbourhood in east Scarborough that encompasses several historically distinct communities united by their shared suburban character and multicultural population. The area stretches roughly from Lawrence Avenue to Ellesmere Road, between Markham Road and the Scarborough-Pickering border. Developed primarily in the 1960s and 1970s, it features the wide boulevards, strip-mall commercial centres, and curving residential streets typical of that era of suburban growth. The population here is one of the most diverse in the Greater Toronto Area, with large Tamil, Sinhalese, South Asian, Chinese, Filipino, and Afro-Caribbean communities. Markham Road serves as the main commercial artery, lined with shopping plazas featuring Tamil grocers, Chinese barbecue restaurants, Filipino bakeries, and Caribbean take-out spots. The Scarborough Village Recreation Centre and Cedarbrae Library serve as community gathering points, offering programs in multiple languages. Cedarbrae Golf Course, a public course operated by the City of Toronto, provides a green anchor and recreational outlet, while the nearby Highland Creek ravine system offers natural trails through wooded valleys. The neighbourhood's affordable housing stock — predominantly semi-detached and detached homes — continues to attract immigrant families seeking space and community. While transit connectivity could be stronger, the area's diversity, affordability, and family orientation make it a vital part of the Scarborough tapestry.
